How to turn an image into an AI video: references and motion prompts

When turning a still image into a clip, decide what should move and how it should move. The image provides visual cues; the text expresses the action, mood and camera intention. A simple first action makes it easier to assess whether the generated result does what you need.

01

Choose a clear image you have permission to use

Prefer a visible subject, limited obstruction and a composition that is easy to understand. Decide what matters most: the character’s appearance, overall color, setting or the shape of an object. A blurry image, hidden hands or many small details calls for closer review after generation. Confirm permission for real people and third-party works before uploading. A reference is a creative input, not a promise to reproduce every detail pixel for pixel.

02

Describe the main action before adding camera movement

A useful starting structure is subject, primary action, environmental movement and camera. For example: the character looks toward the window, a light breeze moves the curtains and the camera slowly pushes closer. That gives more direction than asking the image to come alive. Avoid combining a turn, a run, a costume change, a new location and rapid cuts in one shot. When many requests compete, it becomes harder to understand which instruction affected the result. Prompts guide the model but cannot guarantee exact motion or identity.

03

Test a single clip before deciding its role

Moonling AI’s single-video workflow accepts a prompt and can use a reference image when supported by the selected feature. Check the current mode and model’s available inputs before generating. Review the character, hands, outlines, background changes and motion. A suitable clip can be saved to your phone or used as a teaser, storyboard experiment or social-video element. Decide whether to regenerate, combine or publish based on the actual output and the rights to your materials.

Three questions before generating

  • Which subject and visual features should remain recognizable?
  • What is the one main action this shot needs?
  • Have you chosen the aspect ratio and intended use?

Begin with one small movement and take the image’s story a little further. Use Moonling AI to express the shot through both reference and text.
