Character consistency in AI video: references, outfits and shot review
A character changing their face or outfit between shots can interrupt a story. Consistency depends on the generation model, but also on prompts, references, costume notes and scene instructions. A reusable character description gives you something concrete to compare against the result, rather than relying only on a request to keep everything consistent.
Separate the character from the current costume
Record relatively stable identity details first: approximate age, face shape, hairstyle and distinctive features. Then record the outfit and state needed for each scene. For one indoor conversation, you might specify a dark gray jacket, black shirt and no scarf throughout. If the next prompt instead asks for a pale cardigan, the instructions conflict. When the story does require a change of clothing or location, mark the scene transition clearly rather than mixing that change into one continuous action.
Check the text as carefully as the reference
A reference image helps express appearance, but it does not cancel other instructions in the prompt. A character wearing a coat in the reference and hospital clothing in the text introduces competing requirements. Moonling AI supports character descriptions, reference images and saving characters to a library. After reusing a character, still check that each shot agrees with the outfit, hairstyle and setting needed for that moment. References and saved characters support continuity; they do not guarantee identical results.
Compare neighboring shots before expanding the scene
Check the face, hair, clothing colors and accessories first, then compare position, gaze and motion across the cut. Test a few important shots before generating a longer sequence. When one result fails, refine that shot’s prompt or reference and regenerate the affected part. Review what actually changed before repeating the whole process. Generation uses the credits and options shown in the app, so make deliberate choices about which shots need another attempt.
A reusable continuity checklist
- Stable appearance: age, face, hairstyle and essential accessories.
- Current scene: outfit, setting, time, lighting and character state.
- Neighboring shots: compatible descriptions and a coherent visual transition.
Write the continuity requirements clearly, then judge the result. Use Moonling AI’s character library, references and storyboard editing to refine the people in your story.
